Starting in 1991, the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestraperformed a series of Orchestral Game Music Concerts, and in 2004 a " Music From Final Fantasy" concert toured the United States. Moreover, music from the Final Fantasy series is now the stuff of major symphonies. The composers Owen Pallettand Michael "Piano Squall" Gluck, for example, were inspired to pursue musical careers because of scores, and both have written for the franchise. Composed by Nobuo Uematsu(who was discovered by Sakaguchi while working in a music rental shop in Tokyo in the mid-1980s), the scores have inspired orchestral, vocal and piano arrangements that increasingly are embraced by serious musicians. And they're not just video games, they're video games with fantastical music scores.

The production is a lot of fun and the San Francisco Opera sets are spectacular, particularly the multi-tiered stage filled with angels. I am not usually a fan of Denis O'Neill's when he plays heroic tenors but he was admirable in the wimpish role of Faust.īrian Large directs with a dependability that we take for granted. Samuel Ramey is suitably diabolical, Gabriela Benackova nicely differentiates her double role of Margherita and Helen of Troy, the real woman and the fantasy woman. The second act is most successful with a devil's chorus vigorously conducted by Mefistofole, the aforementioned mad scene and then a touching duet between Margherita and Faust. Boito permits Margherita a mad scene before her imprisonment to explain this. For instance, in the Gounod, we suddenly find Margherita in prison, having murdered her child. Both operas are episodic and by putting the two together you get something like the complete story.
It is based on the Faust legend and, quite by coincidence, I watched Gounod's Faust the week before I saw this recording. This is the only completed opera by Arrigo Boito, better known for his libretti for Verdi's late masterpieces Falstaff and Otello.
